National Volunteer Week: Celebrating the volunteers behind our community impact
It’s National Volunteer Week. Kids First Australia brought together volunteers from across the organisation to celebrate the people who generously contribute their time, experience and care to support children, young people and families.

This year, more than 140 volunteers contribute across 12 Kids First programs, playing an important role in strengthening connection, community and wellbeing alongside staff and practitioners.
The celebration evening created space for volunteers from different programs and communities to connect, share experiences and be recognised for the contribution they make across Kids First. The evening included leadership acknowledgements, shared activities, volunteer recognition moments and a Polynesian dance of gratitude performed in appreciation of volunteer service from Malia Vaeoso Seumalu, Community Integration Lead North/West & Practice Support Coordinator.
Across Kids First, volunteers support programs in many different ways including mentoring young people, supporting families, assisting community programs and helping create welcoming and inclusive environments for people accessing services.
For volunteer Terry, who contributes to both the Op Shop and Transport Volunteer Program, volunteering has become deeply personal.
“Volunteering at Kids First makes me a better person — it’s a privilege to be of service.”
“There’s a freedom in it and you come away at the end of the day feeling really great. I don’t feel like I’m doing a favour by volunteering, it definitely helps you grow as a person.”
Terry reflected on the importance of creating welcoming spaces for community members and the value of small moments of human connection.
“When people come in, how lovely it is to just say hello and have a little moment of connection.”
Volunteer Robyn, who participates in the Mentoring Mums program, spoke about the importance of building trust and social connection through consistent support.
“It’s important for her to have an opportunity to tell her story and talk about things that are important for her.”
“It’s a great program, so positive. I’m learning from Samantha and hopefully she’s feeling she’s got some more confidence because she’s got a lot to give in life.”
The impact of volunteering is also reflected in long-term mentoring relationships developed through Kids First youth programs.
Volunteer mentor Amal has continued supporting his young person through significant challenges and transitions, helping build trust, stability and positive connection over time.
