Top Tips
- Consultation: you’re not the expert of every area - build relationships, introduce your role, be curious
- Be available: talk to new staff, talk informally about volunteers
- Profile raising: promote internally via newsletters, intranet, all staff emails, teams channels, etc
- Champion your volunteers: let people know when your volunteers have a win, big or small, invite other staff to volunteer events
- Easy process: make a one-page document that outlines the process step by step
- Give examples: be specific, it will get people thinking!
Above all, if this is something new for you and your organisation my main piece of advice would be to start small! If there is a small project, event or short-term role that a volunteer could assist with that’s not too complex and other staff/management are happy then start there- you can build on your successes over time and you will start to notice a shift in your workplace towards more volunteer involvement. Go for it!
