International Women's Day 2022
08/03/2022
#BreakTheBias
IWD 2022 has the global theme of #BreakTheBias. Imagine a gender equal world.
A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
It’s hard to believe that after 114 years, women around the world are still fighting for gender equality, including here in Australia. IWD is an important day to highlight the role of women in overcoming discrimination and bias based on gender in the workplace and the community.
In 1908, 15,000 women marched in New York City demanding better pay and conditions; a couple of years later at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen a similar march was held and there was a unanimous vote to take the event global. In 1975, the UN declared a day of observance for women around the world. Each year from 1908, groups of women have rallied to support each other and demand positive change.
The global theme unites the message from people of all genders to leaders and those in positions of power and influence: gender equity is not just for a few, but is a basic human right for women everywhere.
Emily and Modupe from the Kids First team describe what International Women's Day means to them, and what they are doing to break the bias and challenge and call out stereotypes.
