Key Highlights from the Evaluation

The evaluation revealed several significant outcomes that underscore the transformative potential of the EYEP – Kindergarten Model:

  • Improved implementation over time: The model’s implementation improved steadily over the three years, supported by the development of valuable resources for education teams.

  • Consistently high quality: Kids First kindergartens consistently outperformed the E4Kids dataset and demonstrated resilience against the national trend of declining quality ratings across National Quality Standards (NQS) benchmarks.

  • Protective effect on quality: The use of the EYEP – Kindergarten Model likely contributed to maintaining high-quality services during the evaluation period.

  • Impact on vulnerable communities: Efforts to improve service quality are crucial, particularly for children in vulnerable situations, highlighting the importance of this innovative model.

Parent Perspectives

Parents played a vital role in the evaluation, with 287 families completing surveys and 45 participating in individual interviews. Their feedback provides valuable insights:

  • Positive relationships: 89% of parents reported having a good relationship with their child’s educator.

  • Safety and connection: 88% of parents agreed their children felt safe and connected at their kindergarten.

  • Welcoming environment: Parents frequently highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and the dedication of teachers and educators as the best aspects of their child’s kindergarten experience.

Areas for improvement identified by parents included increasing educator-led communications and refining enrolment processes, which are already being addressed to further enhance the model’s effectiveness.

The Road Ahead

Building on these findings, Kids First is committed to expanding the reach and impact of the EYEP – Kindergarten Model. In 2025, we plan to:

  • Expand nationally: Make the model available to universal kindergarten and long day care providers in vulnerable communities across Australia.

  • Further evaluation: Partner with MCRI to evaluate the model’s impact on children’s social, emotional, and educational outcomes.

  • Trial in long daycare settings: The model is already being trialled in a long day care setting in Western Australia, paving the way for broader implementation.

A Shared Commitment to Quality

The EYEP – Kindergarten Model is setting new benchmarks in early childhood education, ensuring that children, families, and communities have access to the highest quality care and support.
